Update: Pedestrian who died in Burton accident identified as Beaufort man
A 62-year-old Beaufort man who died Wednesday night after he was struck while walking on U.S. 21 in Burton was the fifth pedestrian to die in Beaufort County so far this year.
Deputy Beaufort County Coroner Deborah Youmans identified the man as Andrew Jenkins, who died at the scene.
There was one pedestrian death in Beaufort County in 2015 but five so far in 2016, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Statistical Analysis and Research Manager Emily Thomas. Those deaths included a woman who was struck while she was sitting in the roadway in Sheldon in February and a woman who was hit while trying to cross S.C. 170 in Okatie. Both of those incidents happened at night.
The patrol did not have more data immediately available on the pedestrian deaths.
Jenkins was walking in the median of the roadway near Bruce K. Smalls Drive around 7:15 p.m. and was struck as he attempted to cross the road on the southbound side, according to the patrol.
The driver of the 2003 Buick SUV involved in the crash has not been charged and was not injured, the patrol said.
