3 coffins found floating in Coosaw River after Hurricane Matthew, coroner says

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office is working to identify three coffins that were found floating in the Coosaw River as a result of Hurricane Matthew.

Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen said Wednesday that the first coffin was reported to his office around 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday and recovered by the S.C. National Guard. Two more were spotted later.

The coffins came from the Warsaw Cemetery, Allen said, and all three have been identified.

Caskets can be forced to the surface when the ground becomes saturated. Allen said anyone who sees a displaced coffin can call the Coroner’s Office at 843-255-5150.
