New details released in Saturday’s multi-motorcycle crash

The South Carolina Highway Patrol has released new details about a crash involving five motorcycles Saturday just before 7 p.m. on Laurel Bay Road near Eleanore Fine Road in Burton.

The five motorcyclists were traveling west on Laurel Bay Road when one driver “slowed for traffic,” South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Matt Southern said Tuesday morning.

Another driver - who was later charged for driving too fast for conditions - collided with three of the motorcyclists, one of whom then collided with the motorcyclist who was slowing down, Southern said.

Two drivers sustained incapacitating injuries, one sustained non-incapacitating injuries, one sustained possible injuries and the driver who initially slowed his motorcycle was not injured, Southern said. The four injured motorcyclists were transported to hospitals for medical attention, but those hospitals were not specifically named in the Highway Patrol report, Southern said.

None of the drivers were wearing helmets at the time of the crash, but all are over 21 years old and are not required by law to wear them, Southern said.

Additionally, the report did not indicate that alcohol played any role in the collision, Southern said.
