16 for 2016: No. 5: Making I-95 safer
State engineers will cut down trees and install cable barriers along a stretch of I-95 in Jasper County known as the "coffin corridor."
Exactly when in 2016 work will start depends on how quickly environment permits can be obtained and when field studies are completed.
The project is a reaction to an investigation by this newspaper that showed more people died along our small stretch of the interstate than in all other areas of the interstate in South Carolina combined. That's largely because the number of trees hugging the highway make our stretch of intersection less forgiving to cars leaving the road.
