This 'lavish' Beaufort County island is a top romantic getaway, Southern Living says

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Southern Living has listed Daufuskie Island among its 17 Best Small Towns in the South for a Romantic Getaway.

The publication suggests a horseback tour of the island that’s just off the coast of Hilton Head Island and is accessible only by boat.

It makes note of Daufuskie’s “white sand beaches, wooded trails and plenty of wildlife,” but those who prefer staying indoors can “clink glasses with your partner at the Daufuskie Island Rum Company” or visit art galleries and restaurants.

The distillery, featured last year in Vice for its breakfast rum, is currently closed for winter repairs until Feb. 28, according to its website.

Vacation rentals on Daufuskie Island run from lavish oceanfront mansions to isolated villas, Southern Living points out.

In January, Bravo cable network’s “Jet Set” made mention of the island’s quiet atmosphere and amenities in its list of “9 Secret U.S. Islands You’ve Never Heard Of — But You Should Visit.”

And about a week later, Orbitz called Daufuskie Island’s Haig Point a “secluded oasis” and the best place in South Carolina to get married.

For those of you in Beaufort County who want a romantic getaway that’s a little bit farther away but still within a short drive, Southern Living also includes Georgetown among its recommendations. There, it says visitors can browse high-end furniture shops and funky boutiques before heading back to their room at 620 Prince — “an elegant bed and breakfast” in a 19th century home — or Mansfield Plantation, which dates back to 1718.

Southern Living’s list also features another barrier island. The Jekyll Island Club Resort on Jekyll Island, Ga. is “a posh hotel that seems as if it could leap from the pages of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novella,” the publication says.
