This Beaufort County lighthouse was featured by USA TODAY — and it’s not the one you’re thinking
Although this may have slipped off your radar — August 7 marks National Lighthouse Day.
And in celebration, USA TODAY put together a slideshow of 50 “Lighthouses around the U.S.,” which included a lesser-known Beaufort County lighthouse.
The slideshow featured the Haig Point Lighthouse on Daufuskie Island, as the 41st photo.
The accompanying caption reads: “Lighthouse keepers Patrick and Bridgett Comer activated the Haig Point Lighthouse on Daufuskie Island, S.C. for the first time on October 1, 1873.”
According to Haig Point’s website, the lighthouse was built to “guide captains navigating the shirt shoals of the Calibogue Sound.”
“The Lighthouse’s 40-foot tower served mariners traveling around the northern tip of Daufuskie between 1873 to the 1930s. After many years passed with no attention to the structure, the Lighthouse was restored in the 1980s after development began at Haig Point,” the website states.
Hilton Head’s Harbour Town Lighthouse and the Hunting Island State Park Lighthouse, both notable Beaufort County lighthouses, were not mentioned in the article.
