Croquet season is upon us as major regional championship returns to Beaufort County

The U.S. Croquet Association Regional Golf Croquet Championship is back in the Lowcountry for the first time since 2015.

Play between the 32 competitors began Thursday morning and continues through the weekend with final rounds on Sunday.

Singles and doubles matches are being played at Dataw Island Club, Sun City Hilton Head and Spring Island with winners advancing to the national championship in Cashiers, North Carolina.

“We’re really excited to open our doors to this talented field of players,” Dataw Director of Golf Maintenance Brian Hollingsworth, whose team also maintains the croquet lawns, said in a recent news release. “The lawns are in great shape and my crew is really happy to see their work showcased.”

A dozen of the players competing are from Beaufort County with others from South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia.

Croquet will return to Beaufort County again on May 7 for the annual AMIkids Beaufort Croquet Picnic on Brays Island that raises money for the residential education and a treatment program that empowers school-aged boys.
