Lowcountry Masters takes 3rd at S.C. Long Course meet; Sun City 5th

Pete Palmer rewrote eight state age-group records and Bob Colyer and Barbara Eisele set three apiece as the Lowcountry Masters took third place at last weekend’s South Carolina Long Course Meters Championships in Greenville.

Sun City Hilton Head, meanwhile, used eight victories from Jo Stewart and five from Cynthia Smith to score a fifth-place finish in the team standings. Stewart also lowered the state record in the 200 breaststroke, and the club put its name on a trio of relay records.

Lowcountry Masters collected 795 points on the weekend, finishing 40 points out of second place. Sun City Hilton Head finished with 395 points.

Palmer, swimming in the men’s 80-84 division, took down state records in the 400, 800 and 1,500 freestyle, 50, 100 and 200 backstroke, and 100 and 200 breaststroke.

Eisele (women 85-89) set new marks in the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly, while Colyer (men 75-79) broke records in the 50 and 200 breaststroke and 50 butterfly.

In addition, Susan Korsedal also established new state records in the 50 and 100 backstroke.

Smith was part of the same quartet that set all four relay records for Sun City Hilton Head, lowering marks in the 200, 400 and 800 meter freestyle. Marian Bastian, Rose Carney and Debbie Walsh rounded out the quartet.

Bastian also won two individual events, along with a trio of runner-up finishes. Peter Gordon also captured two wins and four second places for Sun City.
