Beaufort Special Olympians collect 5 swim medals at state meet

Beaufort’s Carolina Hammerhead Sharks swim team took home five medals from this month’s state Special Olympics Summer Games in Fort Jackson, three of which were gold.

Jacob Slatko, Shawn McEvoy and Michaela Knoppel each received gold medals for winning their races, while silver medals went to Jason Deschamps and Joy Thompson. Coach Debra Marshall noted several of the swimmers were competing for the first time at the state level.
