Former HHCA standout wins Big East indoor long jump
Former Hilton Head Christian standout Zach Polk captured the long jump at last weekend’s Big East Indoor Track & Field Championships, as the Xavier sophomore went 7.18 meters on his final jump at Staten Island, N.Y.
The leap, just shy of his longest during the indoor season, gave Polk his first collegiate victory.
“He’s very talented,” coach Ryan Orner told a school liaison, “but he puts in 100 percent every day so he deserves the win. It happened on his last jump, so it was exciting to watch him win it that way.”
Polk also placed seventh in the 200 meters, posting a time of 22.61 seconds.
The victory came one week after Polk was named the Big East’s Field Athlete of the Week, when he took second in his first high jump competition since his HHCA days. His jump of 1.95 meters stands as the conference’s best this season.
