New Santa Elena Regatta to bring races on same weekend
Sailing’s Jean Ribaut Cup and Pedro Menendez Cup will be on back-to-back days this year to create the Santa Elena Regatta, commemorating the 450th anniversary of the Santa Elena colony’s establishment on Parris Island.
The Jean Ribaut Cup will be contested April 2 in Port Royal Sound and the Beaufort River, with the Pedro Menendez Cup following a day later. The races will be sailed as separate events, organizers said, with results combined to crown an overall Santa Elena Regatta winner.
The regatta is open to boats at least 22 feet in length, with a PHRF rating listed in the U.S. Sailing manual. Boats over 18 feet will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The event, conducted by the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club, will serve as the opening event of the monthlong Santa Elena anniversary celebration. Award presentations and other social events will take place at the BYSC.
