Hilton Head Island’s third annual pickleball tournament began Wednesday at Palmetto Dunes Tennis and Pickleball Center and runs through Sunday.

The Association of Pickleball Professionals’ Sunmed Hilton Head Open features both men’s and women’s events ranging from amateur to pro doubles and singles.

This event is a “golden ticket” event where all gold medal winners will be registered for the 2023 USA Pickleball Nationals in Indian Wells, California. The gold medal matches will be played on Sunday.

The event has a $65,000 prize purse for pro players. The money will be split between the winners of the various pro events.

Nearly 1000 players, both local and from across the county, are expected to compete in the tournament, according to a press release from APP.

Tickets are $10 per day. Each day begins at 8 a.m. and ends around mid-afternoon.

APP is the only professional pickleball tour sanctioned by USA Pickleball. This is Hilton Head’s third year on the APP tour.
