Bridge Bowl series between Bluffton, Hilton Head has seen nail-biters, blowouts
With the 12th installment of the Bridge Bowl -- the rivalry game between Hilton Head Island High and Bluffton High -- set for 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Hilton Head High, the series is as heated as ever.
In fact, Bluffton head coach Ken Cribb said the teams have never been closer than they are right now.
After Hilton Head Island won the first four games in the series, Bluffton responded with a winning streak of five games, none of which were close.
B.J. Payne and company ended the skid with a 1-point win in 2013 that came down the final two minutes. Last season, the Seahawks' defense held on for its life to win a low-scoring affair.
Hilton Head Island leads the series 6-5, but Bluffton has outscored the Seahawks 366-185 in the series because of some big blowouts during its wins.
Here's a look at the series history:
Sept. 26, 2014: Hilton Head Island 12, Bluffton 7
Trailing 7-6 in the fourth quarter, DeAngelo Clark took the ball out of the wildcat offense and scampered 22 yards for a score on fourth-and-1 with 8:37 to play put the Seahawks ahead for good. Hilton Head Island's defense forced a deciding four-and-out deep in its own territory to seal the win.
Sept. 27, 2013: Hilton Head Island 33, Bluffton 32
Hilton Head Island's Jon Baty picked off Bluffton's Alex Davis at the Seahawks 1 with 1:40 remaining, and Hilton Head Island ran out the clock for its first win in the Bridge Bowl since 2009. Khalil Lewis led the way for the Seahawks with 171 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries.
Sept. 21, 2012: Bluffton 80, Hilton Head Island 14
Bobcats quarterback C.J. Frazier tossed six touchdowns, three to Marquis Webber, as Bluffton won its fifth straight in the series. Bluffton built a 45-0 halftime lead before cruising to the easy victory.
Oct. 28, 2011: Bluffton 58, Hilton Head Island 6
The Bobcats capped their only undefeated regular season in school history with a season sweep of the Seahawks. Quarterback C.J. Frazier threw five touchdown passes, while Jerry Scott ran for 135 yards and a pair of scores.
Aug. 19, 2011: Bluffton 76, Hilton Head Island 0
The Seahawks suffered their largest margin of defeat in school history, as Bluffton built a 57-0 halftime lead before registering the season-opening win. Jerry Scott led the way, grabbing two touchdown catches while rushing for two more.
Oct. 29, 2010: Bluffton 37, Hilton Head Island 0
Eric Boyles scored four first-half touchdowns to help Bluffton sweep the season series. A Cane Bay win over Berkeley during the game combined with the Bobcats' victory to deliver Bluffton its first Region 7-AAA championship.
Aug. 21, 2010: Bluffton 39, Hilton Head Island 0
Desmond Jenkins hauled in a 78-yard touchdown from Corey Stoner before adding another pair of scores on the ground, and Bluffton captured the program's first Bridge Bowl victory.
Oct. 30, 2009: Hilton Head Island 55, Bluffton 12
The Seahawks capped the regular season with their most dominant Bridge Bowl victory to date. Hilton Head High won its final four Region 8-AAA games to finish second in the conference and earn a home playoff game, a three-point loss to Socastee.
Oct. 21, 2008: Hilton Head Island 28, Bluffton 10
Hilton Head Island completed an undefeated Region 8-AAA season with its third straight win over Bluffton. Marcus Green led the way, rushing for 157 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Oct. 27, 2007: Hilton Head Island 27, Bluffton 15
Green ran for 125 yards and three touchdowns, as Hilton Head Island held off Bluffton despite leading only 12-9 at the half. The win denied Bluffton a chance at the playoffs, as the Bobcats finished 4-6.
Oct. 28, 2006: Hilton Head Island 10, Bluffton 0
The Seahawks emerge with a victory in the first installment of the Bridge Bowl, in a downpour at Bobcats Stadium. Michael Boher booted a 30-yard field goal to break a scoreless tie in the third quarter before Cavin Sunkins sealed Bluffton's fate with a 2-yard touchdown run.
