Local all-state offensive lineman to play for South Carolina football
Chase Sweigert is staying home to play college football.
The Chapin High School offensive lineman announced Saturday he will be playing for Shane Beamer and the South Carolina football program. The Gamecocks offered Sweigert as a preferred walk-on back in January and he visited practice last week.
Being a preferred walk-on guarantees a recruit a spot on the roster but no financial assistance to start his college career. He can also enroll and participate in preseason workouts at the same time as scholarship athletes.
“It’s an awesome place. Coach Beamer, Coach Adkins and the entire staff are great people and I see great things coming from them in the future,” Sweigert said. “It’s my hometown and there is lots of great opportunity to learn from older guys and to make me better along with the team.”
The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Sweigert had offers from South Florida, Western Kentucky, Charlotte, Liberty, East Carolina, Liberty and Old Dominion. He also had interest from Auburn and Florida, two places he visited recently.
Sweigert is ranked as the No. 33rd prospect in South Carolina by 247Sports Composite. His teammate Zavier Short signed with the Gamecocks in December and will enroll in the summer.
Sweigert was an all-state selection this year and played in the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl this season. He was the anchor of the Eagles’ offensive line and follows in the tradition of strong offensive linemen the school has produced over the years, joining the likes of Mason Zandi (South Carolina) and Thornton Gentry (N.C. State).
