Which Harbour Town legend is teaming with Rascal Flatts’ Jay DeMarcus on a new movie?
Gregg Russell, deeply rooted in Hilton Head Island lore as the singer beneath the Liberty Oak in Harbour Town, is branching out into movies — again.
Rolling Stone reported Wednesday that Russell is teaming with Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts and others to produce an adventure film called “All Shook Up” centering around the mystery of a nuclear bomb lost in 1958 near Tybee Island.
Russell wrote the script.
“It’s about two young, 12-year-old marsh-rat kind of kids who were out camping and saw it happen,” Russell said. “They devote their lives to finding it. It’s almost like a ‘Huckleberry Finn’-type story that follows the boys to the present day, when they are in their 70s.”
He said the script got a lot of attention out West, and they have picked up the funding for it.
DeMarcus will produce the film with Travis Cloyd and Russell, while Guy Griffithe will serve as executive producer, Rolling Stone reported.
“We hope to begin shooting late this fall on the Georgia coast,” Russell said.
DeMarcus is on the road with Rascal Flatts following the release of the band’s 10th studio album, “Back to Us.”
Russell said DeMarcus “has spent a lot of time here, with his kids coming out (to the Liberty Oak) at night.”
Russell is in his 41st year of singing and entertaining children and their parents. His act long ago became a bedrock for a vacation in Sea Pines.
Last July, DeMarcus made a surprise appearance on Russell’s stage.
Russell asked the country music superstar’s young son, Dylan, to come up on stage. He asked him who his favorite singer was, and Dylan said, “My daddy.” Then his Grammy-winning daddy came up and they sang Rascal Flatts’ hits “Bless the Broken Road” and “Life is a Highway” together, with some help from the audience.
Russell said the elder DeMarcus would like to spend less time on the road but remain creative, and movies are just the ticket. He’ll score all the music in “All Shook Up,” Russell said.
“It seems that all singers want to be in movies, and all movie stars want to be singers,” Russell said.
Russell has produced movies before, including a video called “Camp Tanglefoot” reflective of his life as a campfire guitar strummer, and one called “Come Away Home” shot on Hilton Head.
He also has been researching, writing and developing three other potential movies — one centering around the D-Day invasion during World War II and biographical movies about the late pro golfer Payne Stewart and NASCAR hero Bobby Allison.
“We hope to start the World War II movie sometime around January,” Russell said.
