High winds, freezing cold in Beaufort Co. forecast as winter storm heads for SC
Beaufort County and much of coastal South Carolina and Georgia will likely be spared from wintry weather as winter storm Fern continues toward the eastern United States, according to a Friday morning briefing from the National Weather Service’s Charleston office.
Freezing rain remains the “primary threat” this weekend in the Hilton Head Island area, the NWS said, with 20-40% chance of minor impacts for coastal S.C. and northern Georgia. “Significant uncertainty” remains over the accumulation of ice.
But the cold will still make a visit to the Lowcountry early next week, with 10 mph winds predicted to bring wind chill temperatures into the upper teens and 20s between Monday and Tuesday morning. Cold weather advisories are likely, according to the NWS briefing. Meteorologists predict upstate S.C. will bear the brunt of the storm. Cities like Spartanburg and Greenville are anticipating snow and sleet accumulations of up to 2 inches and possible icy roads making travel “dangerous or impossible,” according to the Greenville-Spartanburg NWS office. Wind gusts could be as high as 35 mph.
