Early forecasts say weekend winter storms possible in the Lowcountry. What to know
Beaufort County could possibly see, and feel, the effects of a widespread winter storm, named Fern, predicted to expand across the Southeast this weekend.
Confidence that the area will experience at least minor winter weather is increasing for the National Weather Service’s Charleston Office, according to a Tuesday morning briefing.
Early forecasts from the National Weather Service indicate a 20% to 30% chance of minor winter storm impacts between Saturday evening and Sunday evening for areas between Charleston and Savannah.
However, much is still unknown at this time about the timing, precipitation and possible accumulations, meteorologists said. Meteorologists with the NWS’s Charleston office told The Island Packet that it will have an updated briefing on Thursday morning with more specific information on the weather.
Frank Strait, severe weather liaison with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources’ Climate Office, wrote in a weather alert that a northerly storm track could mean mostly cold rain statewide, with ice limited to northern areas, while a more southerly track raises the risk of heavy snow in the north and ice storms in the south.
The South Carolina Emergency Management Division provides a winter weather resource guide to help residents prepare for possible winter storms.
