Cold shelters reopening in Beaufort, Hilton Head ahead of below-freezing temperatures

For the fourth time this winter, two Beaufort County churches will become cold weather shelters as the area braces for below-freezing temperatures later this week.

Temperatures could dip as low as 25 degrees Fahrenheit early Friday morning, with wind chill at a predicted low of 16 degrees. Daytime conditions are expected to hover in the 40s on Thursday and Friday and the 50s on Saturday, reaching back into the 60s beginning Sunday afternoon, according to forecasts from the National Weather Service’s Charleston office.

While snow is possible in the Midlands and Upstate as a cold front moves through South Carolina, the Lowcountry will likely get small amounts of rain Wednesday night into Thursday. Less than 0.1 inches of precipitation is expected locally, the NWS says.

Temperatures could reach lows of 25 degrees Fahrenheit in the Hilton Head Island area the morning of Friday, Feb. 21, 2025, as a cold front moves through the Southeast. Two churches in Beaufort County will open their doors as cold weather shelters Thursday evening.
