If you want to live like royalty — but not leave South Carolina — this Charleston County home would be a good place to start.

On sale for $12.5 million, the Chisolm-Alston House at 172 Tradd Street can be found at South of Broad, one of Charleston’s most iconic areas. The listing, by realtor Robertson Allen with the Cassina Real Estate Group, describes the home as an “architectural gem.”

Zillow Gone Wild recently highlighted the home on its Instagram page. The post notes that the house was built in 1834 by Alexander Hext Chisolm, the owner of a rice and lumber mill and that it’s design is attributed to the Prussian-trained architect, Charles F. Reichardt.

“And honestly, I didn’t know they had plan trees in South Carolina,” the Zillow Gone Wild post wrote jokingly.

An example of Greek Revival, the 5,774 square-foot home has been meticulously restored and boasts a grand portico with towering columns, 12-foot ceilings, 4-inch-thick cypress doors, a flying staircase, four bedrooms and four bathrooms, the listing states.

“The unique stately Corinthian columns were modeled on the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens,” the listing states.

Originally, the property fronted the Ashley River before a large land reclamation project in the early 1900s shaped the peninsula into how it is today.

The house is surrounded by a well-planned and established garden with live oaks, palmettos, magnolias and camellias.

Walk through the front door and you’re greeted with checkerboard painted floors. The central hall leads past the book-lined dining room and another big family room to the large kitchen, a breakfast area a porch and stairs down to the garden.

Upstairs are two bedroom suites and two large bedrooms.

“The decor of the house was by noted designer, Carolyne Roehm, with endless thoughtful detail, from fabric-upholstered walls in every bedroom to the rich wallpapers and floors,” the listing states. “The home’s graceful spiral staircase sets the tone for the stylish experience that unfolds across each room.”

The kitchen features a breakfast area, large walk-in pantry, double oven and stovetop, a spacious island, two sinks and plenty of counter space and custom cabinetry.
