Hilton Head airport’s new terminal is ready to open. See what’s inside

The wait is finally over.

With its shiny floors, stunning architecture and comfortable seating, phase one of the Hilton Head Island Airport terminal expansion project is complete and set to open Friday, May 1.

“I’m still a little bit in awe,” said Jon Rembold, Beaufort County Airports Director, at a media tour of the new $42 million facility. “It kind of boggles my mind that we’re here.”

After passing through security, travelers will be able to relax at one of three gates which feature plenty of armchairs and outlets to charge devices. A central bar will soon offer light fare and local brews.

Officials hope the project will help attract more commercial flights and encourage more travelers to fly directly to Hilton Head rather than through Savannah or Charleston.

Currently, the airport only offers year-round, daily service to Charlotte via American Airlines. It also offers seasonal services to Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Chicago, Atlanta and New York City. In 2025, the airport counted 124,177 arriving passengers and 120,808 departing passengers.

How big is Hilton Head’s airport?

At 200 acres, it’s the smallest commercial airport in the United States, Rembold said. Savannah International Airport, by comparison, is about 17 times larger, he said.

Once more people get a chance to enjoy the airport’s new elevated offering, Rembold hopes more travelers will catch on.

“It takes a while for the word of mouth to spread,” Rembold said. “But I think something like this is going to move it a little faster.”

Phase two of the project will include renovating the old terminal. Designs for a new parking lot are also underway.
