Driver killed when minivan and tractor trailer collide on SC road, Highway Patrol says

One person was killed Tuesday when a minivan and tractor trailer crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 2:10 p.m. in Chesterfield County, said Master Trooper Gary Miller.

A 1997 International tractor trailer was driving north on Airport Road, and the wreck happened at the intersection with Coon Creek Road, according to Miller. That’s not far from the state line between South Carolina and North Carolina.

A 2004 Chrysler minivan was turning left from Coon Creek Road onto Airport Road when the vehicles collided, Miller said.

The minivan driver died, according to Miller.

The Chesterfield County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the minivan driver.

Miller said the tractor trailer driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing seat belts.

The Highway Patrol did not say if the crash remains under investigation.

Through Sunday, 830 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least eight people have died in Chesterfield County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 14 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
