Woman killed when car crashes into ditch and tree, South Carolina officials say

One person was killed and another was injured Sunday when a car crashed into a ditch and tree, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 2:35 a.m. in Laurens County, said Lance Cpl. Nick Pye.

A 2012 Nissan coupe was driving south on Georgia Road, and near the intersection with Hellams Road the car ran off the right side of the road, according to Pye. The car hit a ditch then crashed into a tree, Pye said.

The Laurens County Coroner’s Office said 22-year-old Gray Court resident Keundrea Thompson died at the scene, WHNS reported.

The coroner’s office said Thompson was driving the Nissan at a high rate of speed when she ran a stop sign and veered off the road, according to WYFF.

A passenger in the Nissan was injured and taken to an area hospital, Pye said. Further information on the passenger’s condition was not available.

There was no word if either Thompson or the passenger were wearing seat belts.

The crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through Sunday, 823 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 25 people have died in Laurens County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 24 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
