Woman was going to check on relative in a crash when she was hit by van, SC coroner says
A South Carolina woman was killed in a crash when she was trying to check on a family member who had just been involved in a separate collision, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office said.
Jacqueline Parker, a 60-year-old Aiken resident, is the pedestrian who died after the Friday night wreck, Coroner Darryl Ables said.
The crash happened at about 7:15 p.m. on U.S. 1/Columbia Road, near the intersection with East Frontage Road, according to Lance Cpl. Lena Butler of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s close to Exit 22 on Interstate 20.
Parker was walking across U.S. 1 when she was hit by a southbound 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan, Butler said.
Parker was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to Ables.
Information was not available about the original crash that Parker was responding to when she was hit by the minivan.
Butler said the minivan driver and three passengers were not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if any of the people in the minivan were wearing seat belts.
The crash that killed Parker continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled in Newberry, Ables said.
Through Wednesday, 814 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
