Motorcycle rider killed in early-morning crash identified by Richland County coroner

One person was killed Monday when a motorcycle and car crashed in Columbia, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Allen Crawford, a 32-year-old Chapel Hill, North Carolina resident, died in the accident, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Tuesday.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 7:30 a.m. in Richland County, said Lance Cpl. William Bennett.

A 2003 Yamaha motorcycle was driving east on Summit Ridge Drive. At the intersection with Fox Grove Circle it collided with a northbound 2022 Toyota Camry, according to Bennett. That’s about 2.5 miles from Ridge View High School on Hard Scrabble Road.

The motorcycle rider, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the bike, Bennett said.

The motorcycle rider was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital and died there, Bennett said.

Bennett said the Toyota driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the Toyota driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available, and the Highway Patrol did not say if the crash remains under investigation.
