Bicycle rider killed in late night crash, South Carolina Highway Patrol says
One person riding a bicycle was killed Saturday night when the bike and a pickup truck crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The collision happened about 9:30 p.m. in Darlington County, said Lance Cpl. Nick Pye.
The bicycle and a 1990 Nissan pickup were traveling east on East Mclver Road when they collided near the intersection with Palmetto Heights Drive, according to Pye. That’s close to Exit 164 on Interstate 95.
The bike rider was taken to an area hospital and later died, Pye said.
The Darlington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the bicycle rider.
Pye said the pickup driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
The crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through July 23, 561 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 16 people have died in Darlington County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 19 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
