A first-year middle school teacher was killed when he was hit head on by another driver, North Carolina reports say.

Joseph Brenden Edwards was hit head-on after a driver in a Ford F-150 on the opposite side of the road struck a deer and lost control, crossing the center line, according to a news release from North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers. Edwards, 30, of Sparta was driving a Ford Ranger.

The wreck occurred around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1 in Alleghany County on NC 18 near NC 88, troopers say. The other driver was transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson.

Troopers say both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Impairment is not a contributing factor, according to investigators.

Edwards was a first-year teacher at Central Wilkes Middle School, Wilkes County School District superintendent Mark Byrd said in a statement to McClatchy News.

“(He) had become an integral part of the Falcon family. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as well as the Central Wilkes Middle School students and staff,” Byrd said.

Alleghany County is about 100 miles north of Charlotte.
