10-year-old dies when SUV rear-ends horse-drawn Amish buggy, Michigan sheriff says
Two people were injured and another killed when an SUV collided with their horse-drawn cart and trailer in Michigan, authorities said.
A 32-year-old man from Snover was driving a compact SUV along a road in Greenleaf Township just before 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31, the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The driver rear-ended an Amish horse-drawn buggy that had pulled out of a driveway and onto the main road, the sheriff said.
A 35-year-old father and his two sons were riding in the buggy, deputies said. The 10-year-old died at the scene, according to the release. The father and 12-year-old were taken to nearby hospitals. Deputies did not disclose their current condition.
The names of the victims have not publicly been released.
The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office said alcohol was not a factor in the crash and an investigation is underway.
Michigan is home to the sixth-largest Amish population in the U.S. at about 11,000 people, according to Amish America.
Sanilac County is about 95 miles north of Detroit.
