State senator for Beaufort, Jasper counties says he’s running for re-election
S.C. Sen. Tom Davis of Beaufort announced plans to file for re-election to his state Senate seat, a post he has held for 12 years.
The Republican senator’s District 46 includes parts of Beaufort and Jasper counties, where he has worked on such issues as the controversial trash mountain in Okatie to funding for University of South Carolina-Beaufort.
Davis says he has advocated for more equitable treatment of the two counties.
He said he has “a special obligation to the people of Beaufort and Jasper counties — to make sure they are treated equitably when the state decides how to spend our tax dollars.”
“Before I was elected in 2008, our area wasn’t being treated fairly — but we are now,” he said in a release.
Davis previously served as chief of staff to former S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford, after co-managing his gubernatorial campaigns. In 2016, Davis was one of 50 South Carolina delegates to support then-candidate Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention.
Davis has been subject to dark money attacks for leading the charge for legalization of medicinal marijuana in South Carolina. Even Gov. Henry McMaster, who supports Davis’ re-election, promised a veto of any decriminalization bill to reach his desk.
