Check your lottery tickets! $500K winner bought ticket on Hilton Head

Someone who bought a lottery ticket on Hilton Head Island is about to be $500,000 richer.

The winning ticket in Wednesday night’s Palmetto Cash 5 was purchased at the Kangaroo Express store on Pope Avenue, according to a news release from the South Carolina Education Lottery.

Kangaroo Express is in the BP gas station directly behind Coligny Plaza.

The Palmetto Cash 5 ticket matched all five numbers drawn on Wednesday for a prize of $100,000.

Then came the bonus.

When the winner bought the $1 ticket, the person chose to “power up” for an additional $1, which meant if that power-up number were drawn, the winnings would be multiplied by that number.

The stars aligned when the winner was assigned the number 5 — the highest power-up possibility.

The “power up” number drawn Wednesday night was 5, catapulting the $100,000 winnings to $500,000.

Talk about a dollar well spent.

The odds of winning $500,000 playing Palmetto Cash 5 are 1 in 8,031,072, the release said.

More than 5,200 ticket holders won prizes that range from $1 to $500,000 in Wednesday’s Palmetto Cash 5 drawing, the release said.

Over 3,500 of those winners spent an extra $1 to purchase the Power-Up multiplier and will have their winnings multiplied by 5 when they claim their prize.

Net proceeds from money spent by players on the South Carolina Education Lottery are returned to the state in the form of funding for education, the release said.
