E-bike crash in Bluffton leaves man in critical condition, police say

A man was sent to a hospital with serious injuries after falling off his electric bicycle in Bluffton last week, according to a police report.

Police responded to the crash near the intersection of New Riverside Road and S.C. Highway 46 (May River Road) around 6 p.m. Thursday. There they found a man who “appeared to be in critical condition” lying in the street near his e-bike, the Bluffton Police Department report says.

A responding officer noted that two other officers had already detained the man “due to his aggressive behavior upon their arrival,” and that medics were actively providing aid to him.

The man, who public records indicated is 52 years old, was taken to Novant Health Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville, the incident report says. Police reportedly returned the man’s e-bike to his residence in a New Riverside neighborhood.

A spokesperson for Bluffton police did not immediately answer questions about the man’s current condition, the model of e-bike he was riding and the specifics of his reported “aggressive behavior.”
