Driver airlifted to hospital after Beaufort County crash. Troopers investigate
A driver was airlifted to the hospital with severe injuries after a weekend crash in northern Beaufort County, according to police.
Deputies responded to the multi-vehicle collision around 3 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 21 and Old Sheldon Road, located in southern Yemassee town limits near the Alpha Genesis Inc., monkey research facility.
Police determined one of the drivers had potentially fatal injuries, and they were given on-scene medical care until a medical helicopter arrived, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
Authorities shut down the roadway as the helicopter picked up the driver, the report says. The South Carolina Highway Patrol then assumed control of the investigation.
The driver was believed to have survived the crash, according to SCHP spokesperson Cpl. Nick Pye, who said his agency typically sends out a press release when any collision results in a death.
Pye could not immediately answer questions Wednesday afternoon about the extent of the driver’s injuries and the number of vehicles involved in the collision.
This report will be updated as more information becomes available.
