Beaufort Co. will elect first new sheriff in 28 years. Read our GOP candidate interviews

For the first time in nearly 30 years, Beaufort County will elect a new sheriff this November.

Voters in the June 9 Republican primary will choose between two law enforcement veterans: Doug Seifert, a newly promoted lieutenant backed by current Sheriff P.J. Tanner; and JoJo Woodward, a third-time candidate for the position who says the sheriff’s office is in need of a culture change.

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette sat down with each candidate for an hourlong, recorded interview. Click below to read about their qualifications, key issues and plans for the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The winner of the GOP primary for sheriff will go on to face the sole Democratic candidate, Alphonso Small Jr., in the Nov. 3 general election. Small served at several local police departments before winning a spot last year on the Beaufort County School Board.

Early voting for the statewide primaries began May 26, and Beaufort County residents can vote early at four locations in Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head Island and St. Helena Island. The four early voting centers will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

South Carolina holds open primaries, meaning voters can choose to participate in the primary of their choosing, no matter their party registration.

In late May, Beaufort County officials changed the venues of several polling places for the June 9 primary. Click here to see the updated locations.
