Mother of 5 from Jasper County killed in single-car collision Thursday, coroner says

A Ridgeland woman known for having a tireless dedication to family was killed after her car ran into a ditch outside town limits Thursday morning, according to the Jasper County Coroner’s Office.

Rubi Lemus Medrano, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene Thursday morning, according to Coroner Willie P. Aiken. Originally from Mexico, she leaves behind five children and two grandchildren in the Ridgeland area.

The accident occurred around 9:45 a.m. Thursday as Lemus Medrano drove a 2010 Chevrolet sedan northeast on Bees Creek Road, according to Cpl. Nick Pye of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The vehicle ran off the left end of the street and struck a culvert in the area of Colony Drive, which serves as the entrance to the Bees Creek Plantation neighborhood.

The Jasper County Coroner’s Office and SCHP are investigating the fatal collision. Lemus Medrano was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, Aiken said.

Lemus Medrano’s obituary describes her as a kind, hardworking woman who “dedicated her life to her family.”

“Her strength, kindness, unwavering support and contagious smile will forever be remembered,” the memorial page reads.

A Mass honoring Lemus Medrano will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ridgeland, followed by a viewing and funeral service at 1 p.m. at Allen Funeral Home. Her daughters are asking attendees to wear purple or lavender in her honor.
