Coroner names driver killed Sunday afternoon in Jasper County wreck as Ridgeland woman
The driver who died Sunday in a Jasper County wreck that hospitalized at least one other person has been identified as a Ridgeland woman, according to the Jasper County Coroner’s Office.
Jacqueline Washington, 61, was driving with one other person on Lowcountry Drive around 5 p.m. Sunday, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and Jasper County Coroner Willie P. Aiken III. Washington was heading west near Old House Road in a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu when she went off the road and hit a tree.
Both Washington and one other passenger were taken to Savannah Memorial Hospital where Washington later died, according to previous Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette reporting. The two were the only passengers in the car at the time of the crash.
The crash is currently under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Including Sunday’s crash in Jasper County, there were eight other fatal crashes in the state, according to the latest available data from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. In Jasper County, there have been about eight fatal crashes since January. In 2022, at least 31 people died in Jasper County crashes, the data shows.
