One person dead, another hospitalized after Jasper County crash Sunday, officials say

One person has died after a single-vehicle crash Sunday in Jasper County after the driver went off the road and hit a tree, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just after 5 p.m. Sunday on Lowcountry Drive near Old House Road, said Master Trooper Gary Miller with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu car was going west on Lowcountry Drive when it left off the road and hit a tree. The driver and another passenger in the car were taken to Savannah Memorial for treatment. The driver later died from their injuries, Miller said.

The driver had not been named as of Monday morning.

Additional information including whether there was alcohol involved or if the driver was having a medical episode was not immediately available Monday morning.

The weather in Jasper County around 5 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service was fair, meaning there was no rain or visibility hazards.
