Bluffton woman says she blacked out before her car was found in pond
The owner of a white Hyundai found Wednesday in a pond behind the Bluffton Bi-Lo told law enforcement she blacked out and has no idea how her car ended up submerged in the water.
The vehicle was found around 7 a.m. when the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office received a call from a man on his way to the nearby Dunkin' Donuts and saw tail lights in the pond, according to the Sheriff's Office report.
After emergency crews determined no one was in the vehicle, law enforcement used the vehicle's VIN number to track down the owner -- a Bluffton woman living on Hanover Road.
When she got to the scene, the woman told deputies and the South Carolina Highway Patrol she had thought about reporting the car stolen, but then changed her mind, the report said.
She later changed her story twice, first saying she was at a nearby storage unit when someone pulled her from her car and stole it, and then that she had been at the storage unit and then blacked out, the report said.
The woman said the next thing she remembered was walking on Sawmill Creek Road to get home, the report said.
No charges have yet been filed, according to the Beaufort County Court website.
