2 arrested after Beaufort Co. road rage incident leads to assault, police say
Two Ridgeland residents involved in a road rage incident with another driver allegedly followed his vehicle to a Beaufort County parking lot and assaulted him late last month, according to police.
The suspects, 21 and 29, were charged with third-degree assault and battery by mob after the incident on May 24, according to inmate records. After the reported road rage incident, the suspects allegedly saw the other driver park at the Broad River Boat Landing and “approached him,” according to an arrest warrant.
The two suspects then physically assaulted the man in the parking lot, the warrant says, resulting in “bodily injury,” which is a statutory requirement for third-degree assault and battery by mob. The misdemeanor offense is punishable by up to a year in prison.
South Carolina law defines a “mob” as two or more people coming together “for the premeditated purpose” of committing an act of violence.
Both suspects remained in the Beaufort County jail as of Friday afternoon, nearly two weeks after their arrests, according to an inmate roster. Judicial records show they were both granted $5,000 surety bonds.
The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette do not publish the names of individuals who were charged with misdemeanor crimes unless the accused is a public figure or if revealing their name is a matter of public interest.
