Bullet found in Hilton Head grocery store toilet, police say

A customer service representative’s bathroom break took an unusual turn when he spotted a bullet inside a toilet at a Hilton Head Island supermarket last week.

The Smith & Wesson 40-caliber bullet was fished out of a men’s toilet at Hilton Head’s south-end Publix store on Palmetto Bay Road before being handed to police “double-sealed” Friday morning, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

An initial caller told police they believed the round “fell out of someone’s pocket at some point,” the report says. It was entered into evidence as found property.

A responding deputy at the Publix noted it was unclear who the bullet belonged to. There was “no crime” associated with the incident and the case was closed on Friday, according to the police report.

The island’s third Publix store is in development as part of a reimagined Circle Center Shopping plaza. The new 48,000-square-foot location will occupy the old Bi-Lo at 70 Pope Ave., near Coligny Beach Park.
