Pedestrian hospitalized after golf cart crash at RBC Heritage, police say
No criminal charges were brought forward after a golf cart crash at the RBC Heritage sent an attendee to the hospital, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
The woman was walking between holes 13 and 14 at the tournament around 4 p.m. Friday when a golf cart hit her from behind, trapping her right leg under one of its wheels, she told deputies from Novant Health Hilton Head Medical Center later that day.
An “elderly male” who was driving the golf cart then got out, apologized and “offered to take her wherever she needed to go,” the woman was documented saying in a sheriff’s office incident report. She told police she did not get his name or insurance information, but he was believed to be 82 years old.
The woman had ice packs applied to visible bruises on her left ankle, the report says, but a blanket kept the deputy from seeing her right leg, which she said had been trapped under a wheel of the golf cart. She said she was set to undergo X-rays at the hospital and wanted the incident documented, according to the police report.
Deputies later identified the golf cart driver after getting information from the RBC Heritage’s risk management team. Police opted not to pursue charges because the collision “appears accidental in nature,” the report says.
The RBC Heritage concluded Sunday evening with a win from Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick, who fended off Scottie Scheffler to secure his second title at Hilton Head Island’s annual PGA Tour stop. Fitzpatrick walked away with $3.6 million in winnings from the $20 million purse, the Golf Channel reported.
About 120,000 spectators flooded into Harbour Town last week to catch the signature event, according to Angela McSwain, the marketing and communications director for the Heritage Classic Foundation.
Friday’s collision was one of three golf cart crashes within a month that resulted in hospitalizations in Beaufort County. The two others happened in Sun City Hilton Head, with one requiring a woman to be airlifted to a local hospital, according to previous reporting.
