Golf cart driver airlifted after collision with tree in Sun City, police say

A woman was airlifted to the hospital after with severe injuries after a golf cart crash in Sun City Hilton Head, the planned community’s second serious golf cart collision in a matter of weeks.

Beaufort County deputies and a state trooper responded around 7:45 p.m. Sunday to the collision site on Colonel Thomas Heyward Road, near the entrance to the Stratford Village neighborhood within the private retirement community.

The driver of the golf cart, who appeared to have a head injury and a “disfigurement to her right leg,” was treated by medics on the scene before being flown to a local hospital, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

Deputies noted blood on the golf cart’s seat and floorboard as well as a strong odor of alcohol coming from the area of the crashed vehicle, the report says.

Witnesses told police they saw the golf hit strike a tree in front of their home before traveling back across the roadway and resting on the opposite side of the street, according to the incident report.

Police observed a shattered bottle of wine in front of the golf cart, the report says. One of the witnesses reported kicking the bottle out of the way while approaching the crash site to help the driver.

Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the crash, the report says.

The SCHP also assumed the investigation into a March 23 crash between a golf cart and a vehicle in Sun City. The driver was ejected from the golf cart and taken to Novant Health Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville, according to previous reporting.
