Two arrested after weekend shooting, roadway robbery in Beaufort area

Police have arrested the suspected shooter and an alleged accessory after a weekend roadway robbery that turned into a shooting in the Beaufort area.

Bernard Deon Chisholm, 34, of Burton, was charged Saturday evening with attempted murder, strong-arm robbery, misdemeanor assault, possession of weapon during a violent crime and possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent felony.

Bria Monae Smith, 34, of Beaufort, faces two counts of accessory before the fact to a felony for allegedly helping Chisholm flee the scene of the robbery.

It happened just after 2:30 p.m. Saturday as Chisholm allegedly robbed the victim at gunpoint on the roadway of Franklin Street, steps away from the Habersham planned community.

Chisholm fired multiple shots, according to Master Sgt. Robert Herlong of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, but police reported no injuries or property damage.

Herlong would not specify how many shots were fired. He said property was stolen from the victim, but it was “unclear” what exactly was taken.

Chisholm remained in custody at the Beaufort County Detention Center as of Monday afternoon, according to inmate records. He was denied bond.

Smith, whose accessory charges are considered felonies with the same potential punishment as Chisholm’s offenses, was released just after noon Monday on cash bonds totaling $50,000.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
