A pedestrian in the parking lot of a Hilton Head Island supermarket was struck and killed by a semi-truck Thursday afternoon, officials say.

The unidentified pedestrian was pronounced dead in the parking lot of the island’s north-end Harris Teeter after being hit by the International semi-truck around 2:45 p.m., according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Staff at the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office had not released the name of the deceased pedestrian as of Friday morning.

The exact circumstances of the collision were unknown, and it was unclear whether the truck driver would face criminal charges. The SCHP investigation was ongoing.

Thursday’s incident was the 16th known traffic fatality in Beaufort County so far this year and the fourth pedestrian death.
