Update: Coroner names 20-year-old victim in shooting at Beaufort apartments

A 20-year-old man was killed in a shooting early Sunday morning at the Cross Creek Apartments, the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office said.

St. Helena Island resident James Jenkins was pronounced dead at Beaufort Memorial Hospital at 4:25 a.m., according to Chief Deputy Coroner Shane Bowers.

Officers were called to the apartment complex at 235 Ambrose Run around 2:30 a.m. Sunday following a report of shots fired, finding Jenkins with multiple gunshot wounds in a third-floor apartment. Police found shell casings and blood in the building’s stairway, according to an incident report from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency crews provided medical treatment before Jenkins was taken to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries, according to the police department. The agency did not provide details about any potential suspects.

The Cross Creek Apartments’ property manager told police he saw what looked like a silver Infiniti quickly leaving the area after the shooting. Police reviewed the leasing office’s security footage and were not able to identify the make and model of the possible suspect vehicle, according to the incident report.
