Hilton Head teacher arrested and charged with having an alleged sexual relationship with student
A dance teacher from Hilton Head Island High School was arrested with allegedly having a sexual relationship with a student.
Victoria Katherine Montgomery, 32, of Bluffton, was charged Friday with a felony count of sexual battery with a student who is 18 or older, according to Beaufort County jail records. She was released from jail Saturday morning on a personal recognizance bond.
Montgomery was placed on paid administrative leave after the alleged sexual relationship was reported to Principal Steve Schidrich on Wednesday. School officials then notified the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
It is unknown how long the alleged relationship between Montgomery and the student lasted. Officials did not disclose the identify of the student.
Montgomery was charged with a felony because she had “direct supervisory authority” over the student in question. The criminal statute under which she was charged indicates that no “aggravated force” was used.
A now-deleted post from the high school’s Facebook page said Montgomery joined the faculty at the start of the 2021-22 school year after moving from Flint, Michigan. She led the school’s arts department and was tasked with starting its dance program.
In a message sent to students’ parents and guardians Thursday, Schidrich said the high school was taking the incident “very seriously.”
“Be assured the situation is being addressed accordingly in cooperation with law enforcement,” he wrote.
