Hilton Head Island High School teacher placed on leave amid police investigation

A teacher from Hilton Head Island High School was placed on administrative leave amid a police investigation into “a situation involving a staff member and student,” the school’s principal wrote on Thursday.

Students’ parents and guardians were told of the incident via a message sent Thursday afternoon from Principal Steve Schidrich. Classes taught by the teacher would be covered by other certified educators or substitute teachers, the note said.

“We recognize that situations like this can raise concern, and we are taking this very seriously,” the message read. “Be assured the situation is being addressed accordingly in cooperation with law enforcement.”

These allegations were reported to Principal Schidrich yesterday, Candace Bruder, a spokesperson for the Beaufort County School District. The school then notified law enforcement.

Bruder directed additional questions about the incident to law enforcement, including whether it involved an inappropriate relationship between the teacher and student.

Lt. Danny Allen of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the agency was leading the investigation but couldn’t comment on the specifics of the allegation.

This report will be updated.
