Crash on Hilton Head bridges stalls traffic for miles Friday afternoon

A crash on the bridge leading to Hilton Head Island led to miles-long backups for drivers coming onto the island Friday afternoon.

The accident happened around 2:50 p.m. Friday and shut down a portion of the left eastbound lane of U.S. 278 near Windmill Harbor, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

A vehicle was loaded onto a tow truck around 3:30 p.m. on the Hilton Head Bridges after a collision shut down the left lane of the highway for about 45 minutes. Traffic backups extended into mainland Bluffton.

The left lane reopened around 3:30 p.m. after a vehicle was towed from the scene. As of 4 p.m., ongoing traffic slowdowns on eastbound U.S. 278 extended about 7 miles, beginning near the Tanger 1 Outlets in mainland Bluffton and dispersing after the island’s entrance.

Significant rush-hour delays are likely for local commuters and attendees of the RBC Heritage golf tournament in Sea Pines, which entered its second day of competition on Friday.

Traffic backups extended from the Tanger 1 Outlets in Bluffton to north-end Hilton Head Island after a car collision near the Windmill Harbor neighborhood around 2:50 p.m. Friday.
