Editor’s note: Juquetta Jenkins’ charge as an accessory to the murder was dismissed on Feb. 18, 2025.

Four people, including the alleged shooter, were arrested in connection to last week’s deadly killing at a Beaufort apartment complex known for gun violence deaths.

On Wednesday night around 10 p.m., officers with the Beaufort Police Department were called to the Cross Creek Apartments, near the old T.J. Maxx building on Robert Smalls Parkway. At the scene, they found 33-year-old Marquise Tyrell Green suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers immediately began life-saving measures but the victim ultimately died from injuries, police department spokesperson Lori Reeves said.

After Green’s death was ruled a homicide by the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office, police arrested 24-year-old Beaufort resident Jafari Hakeem Brown and charged him with murder, possession of weapon during a violent crime by a person convicted other crimes.

Along with Brown, three women were arrested in connection to the murder. 26-year-old Beaufort resident Stardaisha Richardson, a tenant of the Cross Creek Apartments, 31-year-old Burton resident Emily Cole and 53-year-old Seabrook resident Juaquetta Jenkins all face one charge of accessory after the fact.

Green’s murder is the fourth gun-related fatality at the Cross Creek Apartments in 19 months. Two of the previous victims of these violent attacks were children including a 3-year-old and 6-year-old.

The complex is part of the Beaufort Police Department’s Safe Living Beaufort initiative where sub-stations were established at apartment complexes around the city. The Cross Creek station was established in November of last year.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
