A 6-year-old child was critically wounded after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head at Cross Creek Apartments in Beaufort Sunday afternoon.

Beaufort police are called frequently for gun violence to this specific complex, located northeast of the Walmart on Robert Smalls Parkway. Two separate shootings outside the complex last year claimed the lives of 21-year-old Daveion Reed and 3-year-old Ariana Fair, who was inadvertently shot during a custody exchange in the parking lot.

This weekend’s incident occurred around 1:15 p.m. Sunday with the Beaufort Police Department responding to reports of gunfire. The child, who has not been publicly identified, was rushed to a local area hospital.

As of Monday morning, the specifics including the hospital where the victim was transported and the current status of the victim have yet to be released by interim Beaufort Police Chief and current public information officer Stephenie Price.

“This was an isolated incident and there is no outstanding threat to the public,” was part of a Facebook post released by the police department Monday morning.

Officers are currently investigating the shooting but believe it to be accidental, they added. As of Monday morning, there were no suspects.
