Police searching for ‘armed and dangerous’ men involved in October shooting in Burton

Two Beaufort County men considered “armed and dangerous” are still at large after an October shooting at a Burton gas station that left a Sheldon resident with a gunshot wound, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Kennard Terry-Mitchell, 19, of Beaufort, is wanted for attempted murder, aggravated breach of peace, pointing and presenting a firearm, and the possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Alexander Xavier Smalls, 23, of Grays Hill, also has active arrest warrants for attempted murder, aggravated breach of peace and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in connection to the shooting.

Smalls was identified as a suspect after police reviewed security camera footage from the gas station. He is known to frequent the Seabrook area of Beaufort County, Midtown Drive Apartments in Port Royal and Southwood Park Drive on northern Hilton Head, according to police.

The shooting occurred just after 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 25. Deputies arrived to the Enmarket gas station on Trask Parkway to find a 20-year-old Sheldon man who had been shot. The man was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Smalls and the gunshot victim are believed to know each other, according to police. The shooting was not “a random act of violence.”

Prior to the October shooting, Smalls was out on bond after a 2021 incident in which he was charged with first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He was also released on bond after an attempted murder charge in 2019.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
