2 more minors charged in connection with the shooting Saturday at Hilton Head park

A 17-year-old Hilton Head Islander was charged Wednesday with attempted murder after a shooting over the weekend at a park on the island injured one man, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The identity of the 17-year-old, Jayden Hill, has been released because he will be charged as an adult for attempted murder, according to Maj. Bob Bromage, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

Police had been searching for Hill and another minor, a girl believed to be involved in the shooting, since Saturday. Police were able to detain the girl, who was not named in the alert because she is a minor and will be charged as such, after finding her at a home on Bellhaven Way.

Hill hid on the roof of the house for several hours and was found when he tried climbing back through a window later on, police said in the alert.

The girl will be taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia and petitioned for attempted murder and unlawful possession of a handgun.

On Saturday at around 4:45 p.m. at Hilton Head’s Lowcountry Celebration Park, police responded to a call about shots fired in the area. They found a man had been shot by a group of five. The group included Hill, an adult and three other minors. Deputies found two of the three minors, both boys, and the adult running toward a restaurant nearby. Two handguns were found among their things.

The boys were both charged with breaking into motor vehicles and unlawful possession of a handgun and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center. The adult has not been charged as of Wednesday, Bromage said.

The shooting happened after the man allegedly confronted the group after his car was broken into, resulting in a “physical altercation” and shots being fired. Police found the wounded man, who was taken to Hilton Head Hospital and later released.

Monday, police found a handgun in the park that has been sent in for forensic analysis to see whether it is the weapon used in the shooting.
